Social Psychology Network, a nonprofit educational organization funded by the National Science Foundation, recently released a web-based learning resource on the topic of segregation, and we're writing to let you know about it:

http://www.UnderstandingPrejudice.org/segregation

Building on the work of Nobel Laureate Thomas Schelling, this new interactive resource shows that small social preferences at the individual level can generate surprising patterns of segregation at the group level, and equally important, that the dynamic can be reversed to reduce segregation.

Everyone knows that prejudice can lead to segregation -- to the separation of groups by race, gender, or other social categories. It was this type of segregation that Rosa Parks fought in 1955 when she refused an Alabama bus driver's demand that she move to the rear with other Black riders.

But why does segregation still occur today in schools and other places where people support social equality? Nobel Laureate Thomas Schelling proposed an answer in the 1970s, writing that racial discrimination arises not only from behavior that is "heartless, selfish and illegal" but "from the magnification of small incentives into massive results."

Now this is chemistry made easy! "Chem4kids" presents many different chemistry concepts in a language that most students at the end of elementary school and beginning of high school will understand. It is great to present the three states of matter and the changes from one state to another. Students can also learn about mixtures and solutions, alloys and amalgams. They also discover how neutrons, protons and electrons form atoms that can be combined to form molecules. They are introduced to the periodic table of elements. It also talks about reactions, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, equilibrium, catalysts and inhibitors as well as acids and bases. There is also an introduction to biochemistry. It is certainly too simple for advanced chemistry course in high school, but it is great for younger students who have an interest in the subject.

No, we are not talking about a catalogue for magicians here, we are talking science. As you can see on this image, there seems that be imaginary black dots appearing randomly. This is an optical illusion. If you are teaching your students perception or just the five classical senses, this catalogue of optical illusions will be a success with your students as they will be amazed by what they see. The catalogue includes illusions in the following categories : Geometrical illusions, Lightness illusion, Color illusion and Anomalous motion illusion. Some classical optical illusions include : Müller-Lyer illusion, Ebbinghaus illusion, Zöllner illusion, Café Wall illusion, Fraser illusion and Poggendorff illusion.

My Teacher My Hero

A special project, My Teacher, My Hero launched its new website today, http://myteachermyhero.com. My Teacher, My Hero is a social, video-driven website that honors teachers for the differences they have made in our lives.  Its goal is to inspire a new generation of passionate people to take pride in their desire to teach, and to remind others of the importance of teachers in their own lives.

The site allows users to share video tributes to the most influential teachers in their lives. Already, numerous business leaders, sports stars, and other luminaries have videotaped testimonials about the teachers who most inspired them.

Among those who have already shared videos are:

  • Craig Newmark (founder, Craigslist)
  • Seth Godin (author, blogger)
  • Roberto Clemente Jr. (former professional baseball player)
  • Robert Rubin (former Secretary of the Treasury)
  • Alan Mullaly (CEO, Ford)
  • Barry Meyer (CEO, Warner Brothers)
  • Dominique Moceanu (Olympic Gymnast)
  • Dane Bane (CEO, Trader Joe’s)
  • Dick Cook (Chairman, Disney Studios).

“Teachers open windows to the world for their students by giving them the tools and desire to discover their fellow humans,” said Ford Motor Company’s Alan Mullaly in his video, “It is through this discovery that we learn one of the most important lessons in life – we have more in common than we have differences. Thank you teachers everywhere!”

My Teacher, My Hero is sponsored by the MAT@USC, and built in partnership with Classwish.org and other organizations committed to improving the lives of teachers and students across the country.  If you want to find out more, you can contact them at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
