I heard about the Charlotte Mason method of homeschool early in my homeschool career. My daughter was in Kindergarten and several of the mothers in my homeschool group used the Charlotte Mason Method. I preferred using a standard curriculum, however, as I was new, nervous, and still afraid of ruining my daughters life! One day as my daughter sat at the kitchen table doing her studies, I looked out at the school, and I suddenly had the thought - why exactly am I homeschooling?

Homeschool parents need to avoid burnout since homeschooling children on a daily basis can be strenuous along with other parental responsibilities of life. Becoming "burnt out" as a homeschool parent simply means that somewhere along the way parents may have lost sight of the basic goals. This is easy to do as we are swayed, almost daily by adult peer pressure. There are a lot of people who may question motives and suggest new ways of doing things.

Homeschooling textbooks are under attack, but the real controversy really makes little sense. It seems to have started when MSNBC recently published an article attacking homeschool science textbooks. The problem, as they saw it was that many homeschool textbooks written specifically for homeschooling families discredit evolution and may dismiss it altogether. They looked at this as a disservice to homeschooling families.

Although Charlotte Mason does not use many standard textbooks, it still requires a curriculum of carefully selected books (history, biography, and the like) to provide the child with a well-rounded body of knowledge on each of the subjects. The typical schedule will feature short lessons (10 to 20 minutes per subject for the younger children, but longer for older ones) with an emphasis on excellent execution and focused attention, whether that is in thinking through a challenging math problem, looking carefully at a painting and then describing it, copying just a few words neatly, or listening to a short Bible episode and telling it back.
